Bleach
Kurosaki Ichigo is your normal everyday 15 year old teenager, with one slight problem. You see Ichigo keeps seeing ghost/spirits that refuse to pass on. So our story begins with Ichigo helping out a ghost whose “vigil” has been disturbed. Later on in the day he once again runs into this girl who is now being chased by some sort of spirit monster, this is when Ichigo see’s the monster get wounded by a girl in Black robe with a sword who then procedes to “pass on” the wandering ghost that was being chased. Before Ichigo can confront this woman in black though she disappears. Later that night when Ichigo is trying to make sense of these things, the Girl in black whose name happens to be Rukia shows up in his bedroom tracking a strong spiritual energy. At this point Ichigo begins yelling at Rukia wanting an explanation for what’s going on. Rukia explains that she is a shinigami (Soul Reaper aka Death) whose job is to help wandering souls pass on while at the same time slaying spiritual creatures who are tormented by anguished called Hollows. So the shinigami’s job basically is to maintain balance between the world and the spiritual world called Soul Society. Before Rukia can finish explaining things, the Hollow from earlier invades Ichigo’s house looking for him because apparently he has a strong spiritual energy. So a battle with Rukia and the Hollow begins. Rukia get’s injured in the process of trying to stop the Hollow and asks Ichigo would he be willing to do anything to save his family. Ichigo responds back saying he would do anything to protect the ones he loves. So Rukia transfers over some of her spirit powers to Ichigo making him a substitute shinigami (Death God).
However in the process it seems like Ichigo has taken away all of Rukia’s powers. At this point Ichigo’s life changes as he manages to slay the Hollow. From this point on since Rukia’s powers are lost and it’s up to Ichigo to do her job. So the two spend two months dealing with various Hollows. Until one day two shinigami from Soul Society one of them being her brother named Byakuya come looking for her. Ichigo starts a fight with the two Shinigami’s and is beaten badly almost to near death and loses all of his Shinigami powers. Rukia is taken away by Soul Society charged with the death penalty, apparently it’s against the law in Soul Society to give your shinigami powers to a human.
So from that point on Ichigo trains with Sanda a former Shinigami captain and learns all the things neccessary in order to regain his lost Shinigami powers. Ichigo regains his shinigami powers with a slight side effect that I won’t go into detail about. So now Ichigo joined by three of his classmates who happen to also have spirtual powers (Orohime, Shado, and Ishida) journey to Soul Society in an attempt to rescue Rukia before it’s too late. On their journey through Soul Society the group will encounter many Shinigami Captains all willing to take out the invaders. Will Ichigo be able to save Rukia and give Byakuya some pay back? Well you’ll just have to watch bleach for yourself to find out those answers….
Review:
Bleach by far is Anime Explosion’s anime of the year. At first the show starts off really slow while trying to set up some backstory and introducing various characters who are important players in the series. However after about episode 21 the show starts to pick up when the gang actually invades Soul Society and they begin their battles with the Captains of Gotei 13. From that point on Bleach manages to establish enough action, with just the right amount of character development, and plot. There are also a lot of hidden revelations within the Bleach show that keep the viewers guessing at every episode. Another crowning achievement of Bleach is actually being one of the few anime titles out there that actually has entertaining filler episodes that don’t bore you to death like other anime titles ala Naruto. So with all the right elements that define an anime title from being crap or great. Bleach gets the highest mark possible on TheNerdEmporium.
